Have you heard the "Cruelty and the Beast" remix that came out a few years ago? I always hated the production on that record. The endless extremely loud triggered kick drums especially. I dont know what the hell they were going for and I dont know why everyone else didnt find it as annoying as me. The new mix sounds really good.
My biggest Black Metal discovery the past few years is Departure Chandelier and their Napoleonic Black Metal. Mid tempo Black Metal stuff, which I find a nice change from endless blast beats.
Yeah - I think Damnation and a Day is the only one I’ve given time to - it’s good - but feel pretty much the same - dropped away because it started to become generic - but also agree that’s still a pretty high bar. Will let you know what I think of the remastered Cruelty whenever I get hold of it :)
Well, I was kind of a Cradle superfan for a while. I saw them on I think their first US tour in like 97-ish and thought it was the greatest show I'd ever seen. So I have a lot of fond memories of the first half of their catalog. After that I kind of lost track and everything I've picked up has just sounded sort of generic Creadle of Filth, although I havent given anything the chance it really deserves. And I put "Generic COF" as still above average extreme metal.
I loved "Bitter Suites to Succubi" and "Damnation and a Day". And they have the live album which has been released under multiple names (Live Bait for the Dead, 11 Burial Masses, some other too) but I think is all the same show. Anyway, that is my favorite live metal album of all time. It's actually their record that I probably listen to most.
They also have a song with Ed Sheeran in the can (he was apparently a teen metal dude years back). I think they're waiting for the right marketing moment. But their gimmicks are better than most bands troo kult stuff, imho.
Ooh! Listening to Departure Chandelier now - thanks for the recommendation! When it started I thought it would be too grand and synthy for me but then it hits - really enjoying it so far! Thanks! Great to hear a band pushing expectation!
I’ve only heard the “Remisttessed” - lol - Cruelty digitally - and briefly - because I intended to get the record, but still haven’t spotted it for a decent price. I’ll step up my game of you think it’s that much of an improvement.
Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment and recommend! Really appreciated.
I have only listened to the new Cruelty digitally as well. It was never a fave of theirs for me. So dont pay money for anything on my account! But it just sounds like a solid metal album should sound to me now.

Clicks just right, for me at least.

Is there anything you’d recommend post-Cruelty, other than Midian?

I'm glad you liked it!

This was an excellent tour through some great tunes and for once gave me some guilt free ability to enjoy some black metal.
Ace! Fuck the guilt. Hail Satan etc. Hahaha - thanks for reading and taking the time to comment - enjoy your dive!
In the notoriously sectarian religion of heavy metal fandom, there seems to be two unifying principles: Cliff Burton & Darkthrone.
Hahahah that’s probably true!
Saving this post to check out these records later thank you for this
Thank YOU for reading, Alex! Much appreciated.
I got into a big black metal phase during the pandemic, bene swinging back around to it lately
Me too - I can’t get enough Immortal at the moment. I’m utterly obsessed!
